Although I have lived in the capital region for almost 4 years now, today was my first time skating on the Rideau canal. Last year, at the young age of 32, I decided it was about time I learned how to skate (Not just propel myself forward on ice skates and hope for the best...). I took lessons and followed up this fall and again this winter. I figured at this point, I can stop, control most movements and collect myself if I faceplant so I was good to go! The Rideau canal is the world's largest skating rink (7km). I believe Winnipeg now has us beat for the longest... Natural ice is quite magnificent and well... natural with all of its' wondrous dings and bumps. They don't teach you quite how to handle those in the lessons... The trick is thrust, if you are going fast enough, generally speaking, you will glide right over the imperfections. I have not quite got a good thrust yet as I am still a beginner to skating.
When all is said and done, after only 1 faceplant, I recomend the canal to any wishing to try it!
