Rantings of an IT Pirate

As a pirate is passionate about the open sea, such is my passion about technology. I am the first "ethical" IT Pirate.

Recovering OMEA JetBrains newsreader settings from Backup

I blogged last year about this tool.  I really like it because it allows me to consolidate any RSS feeds I am interested in as well as newsgroups in a single program.

I have tried to recover backup data before to the tool unsuccessfully as a result of database corruption.  I suppose if the source database is the issue, recovering a copy of it will not help.  However, if you have a backup, you are good to go.

If you reinstall the program, here is how to recover all of your settings, customizations, etc:

When the program is initially launched, a popup idow appears asking you for the path to the database and logs.  If none exists, it will be created during this step.  To recover your data, copy the hive from C:\users\<userid>\appdata\local\JetBrains (source) to c:\users\<userid>\appdata\local\.  You can do this step while the popup window is on screen.  As you will see, the JetBrains folder does not yet exist under c:\users\<userid>\apdata\local\.

You may need to restore the setting to view hidden files and folders to see appdata.

These steps will work for Windows Vista and Windows 7.  If you are using Windows XP, instead of users, look under documents and settings.
