November 2007 - Posts

  • SecTor Resources

Last week, Rodney and I both had the opportunity to attend the Security Education Conference in Toronto (SecTor). It was an excellent conference, one that I would recommend if you have anything to do with IT security in your job and can make it to the Toronto area. Next year's conference is already set for October 7-8, 2008, so mark it in your calendar!

We got an email through the blog asking when we were going to post the resources for this conference. Well, this actually wasn't a Microsoft event, although we were one of the sponsors, so we won't be. However, we did contact the organizers and if you attended the conference, you should have received an email this week about that very subject. In case you didn't, you can find all the presentations, plus session recordings, tools and whitepapers on the conference site at www.sector.ca.

  • Ignite Your Career - Webcast Series update

    WOW.

We've taken your feedback over the last couple of years and created this webcast series focused on you and your career. We've had two go down with great participation and tons of questions. The format works great - it's all about you and your time to ask the experts the questions - it's not about "us".

I just finished updating the post event resource page from last weeks call. You can get access to all the links, books and statements made during the call as well as download any of the shows you might have missed.

Check it out if you haven't already.

I am VERY EXCITED to say that I had a call earlier today to confirm the speakers for this Thursday's call... Our speakers include:

    • Blaine Bey - Senior consultant with Sierra Systems.  Current President of CIPS BC
    • Nick Corcodilos - President of North Bridge Group. He's the Headhunter at http://asktheheadhunter.com.
    • Ron McKerlie - Corporate Chief Information and Information Technology Officer, Government of Ontario

In case you didn't catch the subject of this call - here's the abstract:

Once you understand industry trends and have examined your full spectrum skill set, you can now step back and review your career opportunities. This might include growing in your existing role within your organization, exploring other options within your company, or checking out what else is out there. This panel discussion will give you insight into career options and re-ignite your passion for being an IT Pro.

I'll be there as the host - I hope to see you there as well - Come prepared with some good questions!

  • Check out the New Canadian Windows Mobile Site

A couple of days ago I reviewed the HTC Touch from Bell.  Following on the mobile theme, we recently launched an updated Windows Mobile site at http://www.windowsmobile.ca with specific Canadian content and special offers.

The site provides a great set of resources on Windows Mobile including information on carriers and devices available in Canada, how to get started with Windows Mobile, a help and how-to section, as well as information for enterprise, mid-size, and small businesses and how to take advantage of the Windows Mobile platform, and much more.

    Check it out at http://www.windowsmobile.ca.

  • IT Pro Innovation

    Innovation Awards

IT Pro Innovation is an interesting thing.  Not only because it makes things that weren't possible, possible, but because it highlights the creativity and technical expertise of those doing the planning and implementation.  It shows that being an IT professional takes a heck of lot more skill than just clicking Next in a wizard.  That is why Microsoft Canada and the TechNet team celebrate the innovative IT professionals in our country with the annual Innovation Awards.

The TechNet Canada Innovation Award is awarded to an individual or team of Canadian IT Professionals who are bright stars in the IT community. The award recognizes individuals or teams who have used Microsoft-based technology to make a positive impact in their work or community. The individual or team is recognized as outstanding IT professionals by their peers and colleagues, but don’t necessarily have to be on the front line. Often times those who stand behind have paved the way for others.

So do you know an individual or team of IT Professionals in Canada who have…

    · Used Microsoft-based technology to make a positive impact in their work place, home or community?

    · Solved technology problems and implemented solutions that improved productivity, created a competitive advantage, or saved time and resources?

    · Went above and beyond the ordinary call of an IT professional?

    · Helped make the world a better place to live through technology innovations?

If you know someone, are that someone, or are a part of a team that has done just that give yourself a pat on the back and then head over to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/innovationawards/default.aspx and nominate an individual or a team today for the third annual Microsoft TechNet Canada Innovation Award.  Why?

The Individual winner will be awarded: one Crystal Trophy, a cheque for $2000, and a $1000 cheque rewarded to a charity of the winner’s choice as well as hotel and flight to attend EnergizeIT 2008 in Toronto.

The Team will be awarded (awarding up to 5 members): one Crystal Trophy, a cheque for $4000, and a $1000 cheque rewarded to a charity of the winner’s choice as well as hotel and flight for 2 of the team members to attend EnergizeIT 2008.
