  • Stay where y’re at, we’ll come where y’re to.

image My good buddy Rodney wrote up a great explanation of all the activities we’re doing as part of EnergizeIT. Damir wrote up a special edition of the TechNet Flash newsletter talking about all the cities – including registration links for all sorts of activities. It didn’t sit in peoples mailboxes for more then an hour before the e-mails started coming in about where were the East Coast stops (besides Newfoundland).

Well – as the resident East Coaster on the team, I thought I would bring the region up to speed on what’s up! We are actually working on a bunch of activities in three of the four Atlantic Provinces. Unfortunately only the one event in St. John’s Newfoundland made the deadline for the initial mass-mailing as we are still trying to negotiate venues and gather local interest in what can take place.

We’re trying a different approach this time around – instead of focusing all our resources in one event in one location – we’re going a bit more grass roots by visiting a LOT of places for activities.  Hey - we’re open to connect in whatever means possible when we’re in town.

To give you an idea on where “we’ll be to” in April – I thought I’d share some details. On Monday April 20th - myself, Pierre Roman and Christian Beauclair will be flying into Halifax (we’re still finalizing details for an evening event – more on this later). While we’re in town, we’ll be visiting our friends at the Nova Scotia Community College either Monday during the day or Tuesday morning. Tuesday afternoon (the 21st) we’ll be heading out on a drive to Moncton for a visit to New Brunswick and present at a special UserGroup gathering that Marco Shaw is coordinating. We’ll then crash overnight and head out the following day with our team splitting up: Christian will be heading to Fredericton for a user group on Wednesday the 22nd and Pierre and I will be returning to Halifax in order to fly out to St. John’s Newfoundland on either the 22nd or early on Thursday the 23rd. In St. John’s – we’re presenting at a user group meeting at MUN and catching a flight back home sometime on the 24th.

Tough week – but I’m looking forward to it. Being on the road and connecting directly with technical professionals, listening to what you have to say is the part of my job I like the best. Talking with Pierre and Christian – we’re going to make time to connect with people outside our scheduled activities. If you’re up for a coffee or a pint - drop me an email.

Stay tuned here to the blog for the final links and details of the events out east. They will also be up on the main landing page as they get confirmed.

  • EnergizeIT 2009 – Who, What, Where, When and Why?

    blog-header

Well the cat is out of the bag and inboxes, Facebook and the Twittersphere are full of Energize IT chatter.  If you subscribe to the Canadian versions of the TechNet Flash or MSDN Flash you would have received this invitation in your inbox on Thursday afternoon.  Since then the Energize IT mailbox has been flooded with questions.  As Ricky would say to Lucy “You got some ‘splaining to do!”, hence the longest blog post in CanITPro history! (I think)

I originally got my start with the team at the first Energize IT back in June 2006. (Note: If Rick offers to fly you anywhere for an event, make sure you find out what strings are attached!)  Over the years Energize IT has changed a little each year but we heard the same feedback.  “Why isn’t there an Energize IT in my city?”  This feedback even came from the GTA where it can be difficult to get from Kitchener to downtown Toronto for 9AM on a Saturday morning.  We heard you!  We also heard that a Saturday in May or June is not ideal because, well let’s face it, Winter is over and I want to get outside!  So we changed things up!  So let's answer some questions on Energize IT 2009!

The Why - Current economic realities are putting pressure on all of us to utilize technology in new ways. From increasing productivity, reducing costs, and providing clear benefit to the business, everyone plays a key role in making this real. Your ability to understand the technology possibilities to help solve real-world requirements is more important than ever and is where you can make a difference.

The What - From student to CIO, EnergizeIT 2009 is about what’s possible. Through a series of  events across Canada, we will show you how to take advantage of the Microsoft-based platform, Windows 7, and a Software + Services approach to help your organization reduce costs and increase scalability.  There are five types of events being held in conjunction with Energize IT 2009 in the various cities.  So what are these events?

User Group: The Future of the Windows Platform

Innovation solves problems and fosters new ideas; it is the lifeblood of our industry. However, with every innovation, a question is asked by those with the opportunity to leverage it: “How is this going to make my life easier?”

In this session we will help answer this question as we discuss Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 and show you how they can be integrated into your current environment and help solve some of today’s challenges around application compatibility, remote access and branch offices. You’ll learn how you can reduce bandwidth costs between your head office and the branch, how to leverage new virtualization technologies to solve application compatibility issues and discover new capabilities in the Windows platform.

    Technologies: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2

Audience: IT Professionals, Developers, Architects, Technical Decision Makers

Energize IT: From the Client to the Cloud

Windows 7.  Windows Live.  Windows Azure.  The Microsoft-based platform presents a bevy of opportunities for all of us. Whether you are an IT Manager, Developer, or IT Pro knowing how these will impact you is critical, especially in the new economic reality.

This session will allow you to understand Microsoft’s Software+Services vision through a combination of presentation, demonstration, and discussion.   Learn how you can collaborate more effectively and take your small and mid-sized business to the next level and accessible from virtually anywhere using the Microsoft Business Productivity Online Suite.  You will see Windows 7 in action and gain insight into how you can harness it in your environment.  We will demonstrate how Windows 7 and Windows Live allow you to connect and collaborate with friends and family in ways you may not have thought of before.  Find out how to develop applications that take advantage of Windows Azure Services providing new levels of scalability.  Finally, discover how bringing together the power the Desktop with the flexibility of the Cloud will provide amazing opportunities for you to solve some difficult challenges ahead.

Technologies: Windows 7, Windows Live, Windows Azure Services, Microsoft Business Productivity Online Suite, Visual Studio

Audience: Developers, Architects, Technical Decision Makers, Business Decision Makers, IT Professionals

Student Connection: Get Energized About the Future!

Between ever changing technologies, grim economic forecasts and conflicting news reports today’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) students must be scared and confused. While one day you will read “CIOs face critical talent shortage” which spews facts like “…the demand for IT professionals is up 14 per cent across the country...” the next day you will read about layoffs affecting the largest companies in the ICT industry and wonder where your career is headed.

What is the true state of the ICT industry in Canada? What are some of the specialized skills employers looking for? How do you add these highly specialized tech skills to your knowledgebase? What technologies do I need to look out for and how do you keep pace with the changes?

In this session we will look at some of the latest technologies you might have heard about and show you some resources that will let you get ahead of the curve. We will try to separate fact from fiction with information from the ICTC Labor Force Survey and show you how to start your career off on the right foot and continue to grow and suceed!

    Audience: ICT students and faculty

    Technologies: Windows 7, Azure

Faculty Connection: Supporting Faculty to Support The Future

One of the toughest challenge with teaching technology is the fast pace of the industry. In other fields the changes are so steady that most curriculum content stays valid for many years, but in the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) world fast changes are common. As a professor or teacher, it is extremely tough to stay current and follow that industry.

Microsoft offers many programs to help Academia, but unfortunately we have determined they are not easily discoverable and as a result – many of you are unaware of your options. Please join us for lunch to discuss your challenges and help us understand how we can better help you. We will take a few minutes to share the programs we have as well and give you a glimpse at Windows 7 as well.

    Audience: ICT Faculty

    Enthusiast Connection: Windows 7 InstallFest

The latest generation is upon us. If you have not experienced it yet - come and join your local community to re-discover the client.  Rediscover Windows and see what all the fuss is about.  See for yourself how Windows 7 will impact you at work and at home.

Learn by doing it yourself and get your hands on the new ways you can work with the user experience on your desktop. You now have more intuitive ways to open, close, resize, and arrange them. Learn how you can take control of the UAC (User Account Control) without putting yourself at risk; see for yourself the responsiveness of the platform.

Above all connect and exchange stories with other professional and enthusiasts in your local community.  See how they are taking advantage of Windows 7.

If this speaks to you, join us for the EnergizeIT – Windows 7 InstallFest. You’ll get the opportunity to bring your own PC and install the latest build available of Windows 7 and re-ignite your passion for the PC.

    Audience: All

    Technologies: Windows 7

The Where – This has been the number one challenge with Energize IT in the past.  The previous three events have been held in Toronto, and no where else.  Based on the feedback collected we decided to change this in 2009 by taking Energize IT on the road.  So far we will be holding one or more Energize IT events in the following cities…

Victoria, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, London, Kitchener-Waterloo, Mississauga, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax, Moncton, Fredericton and St. John’s!

This is truly a coast to coast event!  While the initial email invitation didn’t include all cities, there will be another mass email invitation coming shortly with the additional events listed as well as registration links.  Some venues just took a little longer to confirm and we couldn’t open registration until we had confirmation.

The Who – YOU!  Whether you are a student, IT Pro, developer, CIO, self employed consultant, or just a technology enthusiast there truly is an event for you.  From student to CIO, we have something for you and we hope to see you at EnergizeIT 2009!

Stay tuned for more updates on Energize IT and if you have any questions about Energize IT, send us an email!

  • Ask Microsoft and your peers @ OWSUG tonight!

This came through my twitter feed this morning from a friend in Kingston…

    image

Shameless plug for an event in Ottawa that is NOT Obama related taking place tonight – Ottawa Windows Server UserGroup has asked myself, Pierre Roman, Christian Beauclair (yes – a DEV will be there) as well as other local Ottawa people in the Tech Community to have an “ask any question” style event. We did one of these in Vancouver with VANTUG during TechDays in January and it was very well received and full of lots of discussion.

It’s still on – despite the snow and Obama Fever that has hit Ottawa. Come on out and connect with your peers, build your trusted resource network and get your questions answered.

you can mail your questions in advance to me directly rick.claus@microsoft.com or spring something on us at the event. PLEASE REGISTER with this link so we can figure out how much Pizza to pick up and set expectations for room setup.

I am going to sweeten the pot and even have a free Certification Exam Voucher or two for the real zingers. We haven’t disappointed yet with this format – everyone gets an answer and everyone has fun. Come on out!

  • Windows 7 Guidance Available!

The team is hard at work on the upcoming Energize IT events and we will be showing you how to take advantage of the Microsoft-based platform, Windows 7, and a Software + Services approach to help your organization reduce costs and increase scalability.  Right now I know a lot of people are focused on Windows 7, learning what’s new, testing applications, etc…

During the last stop of the TechDays tour we met a lot of people who had started testing out Windows 7 already and gathered a lot of feedback from the street on what works.  I’ve compiled a list of hardware and software that others have installed with Windows 7 as well as some workarounds for some minor issues.  It is by no means a complete list, nor is any of it supported but it should provide a good resource for you.  Also, please leave comments on what has worked for you to share with everyone.

Windows 7 – Experience from the Field Page

For those of you with the need to start testing in your corporate environment there is support available to you through the IT Pro Momentum Program.  The program’s goal is to help you succeed with your testing and adoption of the latest technologies, including Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2.  The program provides e-mail based support for beta products, private managed forums, as well as early access to beta bits and when your project is complete, a TechNet+ Direct subscription.  If you’d like to register your company and profile your project email us and we’ll get you enrolled in the program!

  • Windows 7 on a stick.

    Hello folks,

Since Windows 7 Beta 1 became available i have been slowly upgrading all my machines.  It started with my test box A Dell Latitude D830, followed by my production machine a Dell Latitude E4300.  I thought to myself, WOW this rocks!!!  so i went one step further and upgraded my Media Center PC.  Boom, done working perfectly, no driver issues, simply flawless….

Hmmm… which one do I do next? The only two machines left are the family PC in the kitchen, or my wife’s laptop.  That decision was very simple.  My wife does not respond well to technological change. and i do not want to change anything on her setup these days since she is in the middle of a very important project at work that cannot be late.

Ok my decision was taken, DVD in hand i make my way to the kitchen…. Turn the machine on, hit the DVD button. It will not open!?!…  hit the button again….  Still nothing. Logon to Vista, open explorer and right click the drive select “eject”…. Again, nothing.  At that point my daughter walks by and says “oh yeah! That stopped working weeks ago”. After further investigation and interrogation it turns out when you forcibly shove the drive door shut when the PC is turned off, bad things can happen.

Anyway back to the topic at hand. What to do now. Hmm. The machine is fairly recent, it should be able to boot from a USB device. GOT IT! Build a image on a USB key to install Windows 7.

It turns out it was very easy to accomplish. let me show you.

here you have it.  Windows 7 on a stick.

    go forth and deploy!

    Cheers.

  • Are you Certifiable?

    clip_image001

I first got certified in Windows 2000 sometime in 2002 with my Windows 2000 MCP.  At the time I really didn’t put a lot of thought in certifications but used the vouchers my school gave me to write that exam as well as the A+ and Network+ exams from CompTIA.  I landed a job with a company in Winnipeg and that is where I found that employers valued certifications.  I was lucky to get a good recommendation from a friend who was their current sysadmin and on the promise that I would complete my MCSE on Windows 2000 within the year (this was early January) I was hired.  I made the cert in a few months and then soon upgraded to 2003.  A few months back, while at an internal conference, I upgraded to MCITP: Server Administrator and then a few weeks back finished the upgrade to MCITP: Enterprise Administrator.

Yes I am certifiable, but are you?  Not sure?  Want to have some fun figuring it out?  There is a new online timewaster, err game, called Are You Certifiable where you can take on a number of certification challenges, including playing as Clippy.   The game takes the form of a trivia show, but includes a broad range of technical questions geared towards one of two disciplines: Developer, or IT. Some of the questions appear to be taken straight from the pages of Microsoft Certification, so it looks like a good primer for someone preparing to take a MS Certification exam.  And then there are some random questions just to keep you on your feet!

Check out the game at www.areyoucertifiable.com. Enjoy!  And while you are at it, leave a comment with your exam prep tips and share your exam writing tips and experiences!

  • Pssssst! Wanna leg up with your career?

No… I’m not the guy with the trench coat asking if you want to buy the letter C, but I do want to make sure you’re in the know.

Talking with head-hunters / recruiters / IT Managers out there and there’s one thing they’ve told me again and again. They look to hire professionals with personal skills when ranking candidates with equal knowledge and experience. Your personal skills and the time you take to invest in your career development pays off big time – it gives you the edge over your competition. It doesn’t matter if you’re lookin’ for the next gig, or just looking for some extra confidence in the job you are currently at – it just works.

Take the time – make the investment in yourself and in your career.

My team is committed to YOUR success. We’re running our “Ignite Your Career” webcast series starting in March, running every Tuesday until April 7th.  This series was extremely popular last time around and we’ve listened to your feedback asking us to bring it back again!

We’ve designed this series specifically for technical professionals that are interested in developing their career. We’re once again partnered with CIPS to help ensure we’re bringing together experts from across the country from all walks of the ICT industry – developers, IT professionals and managers – in order to answer YOUR questions and share their insights.

This is the third Ignite Your Career series I’ve worked on and I have to say I love putting it together. We’re using the “radio talk show” format once again – nice and easy to listen to, no “death by PowerPoint” and interactive with the audience asking questions using the question manager. In fact – this year we’re taking it up a notch or two:

    • You can E-Mail your questions in advance to iyc@microsoft.com.
    • During the webcast you can join the Backchannel conversation on Twitter by using the #IYC2009 hash tag.
    • Simply tweet your comments, chatter or questions and include to #IYC2009 hashtag to have them bubble up for all to see.

Main landing page can be found at http://www.microsoft.ca/ignite. You can check out the full details, schedule and episode topics from there. As we get closer – I’ll post some interesting tidbits about each episode on the blog.  I’ve also extracted the titles, dates and registration links below if you want to register right now!

  • Want an Overview on Windows 7 Management?

image My developer colleague John Bristowe (known affectionately as JohnB in team discussions) passed along this document and download link on our internal discussion list.

I thought it strange that “a dev guy” would find this interesting, but after perusing the 25 pages of Management Overview information on Windows 7 I can see a whole lot of common ground and overall goodness in there.

Disclaimer: this is not deep technical stuff or “how to’s”.. this is a quick read on the differentiators on managing a Windows 7 box over an XP or Vista box.

it’s a starting point for you to understand what is possible and what you might want to dive into when you take a closer look at Windows 7on your own install or lab system.

After reading it during my afternoon Diet Coke break, i thought I’d share some things that jumped out at me as being interesting to both Developers and IT Pros AND something i think I’ll dig deeper into when preparing to create some demo content for EnergizeIT:

    • Custom Troubleshooting packs for End-Users (let’s face it – if they can fix it, it’s one less thing we’d have to fix)
    • Problem steps recorder – ease of reproduction for further troubleshooting (definitely dev & it pro bonus here).
    • group Policy preferences VS enforcement
    • Powershell Remoting
    • AppLocker – keeps “IT Unauthorized” software from showing up on systems, while still allowing flexibility
    • Bitlocker & Bitlocker to go

Are you running with Win7 yet? Spent any time to think about how you’ll be managing it as of yet? comment here or blog / tweet about it using the #CDNWIN7 tag.

  • TechDays – TechEd DVD Kit Update #2

    image

A while ago we posted an update to the TechEd DVD’s that were included with the Techie Crunch kit given away at TechDays Canada.  I just wanted to post an update as one of our own Canadian Silverlight MVPs has created a new fix.  I gave it a run through last night and find it to be a much better fix than the original one we posted.

You can find Laurent Duveau’s fix and directions on how to install on his blog post “The TechEd 2008 North America DVD fix you’ve been waiting for!

  • MVP Profile – Philip Elder

PhilipElder Philip has been involved with Small Business Server since the BackOffice SBS 4.x days. He has worked in the SMB market for most of his I.T career. With the advent of SBS 2003, the SMB market became the primary focus due to the SBS 2003 feature set providing the best possible value to SMBs.

In 2003, Monique and Philip Elder started MPECS Inc. with the company’s primary market focus being the 5-35 seat market. Solutions provided to MPECS Inc. clients were based around Microsoft software products such as Small Business Server, Windows Server, Microsoft desktop OSs including Windows XP and Windows Vista, and Microsoft Office products.

    With knowledge comes responsibility.

It is with that thought in mind that Monique and Philip decided that Philip should start sharing that knowledge via a blog in January of 2007. The blog has led to many online and in-person SBS presentations as well as written articles online, in magazines, and now an SBS 2008 book: SBS 2008 Blueprint via SMB Nation Press (2008).

    1. If you could ask Steve Ballmer one question about Microsoft, what would it be?
      • What do you like and dislike about your job at Microsoft?
    2. What do you think the best software ever written was?
      • Tough question as there are so many software products over the years that do so many great things for us.
        • Tools: Everest Pro.
        • Productivity: Office 2007 Professional or Enterprise (like that Groove!).
        • Server: SBS 2008.
        • Desktop OS: Windows Vista (check out the blog posts!)
    3. If you were the manager of SBS, what would you change?
      • We would look at a second Premium SKU for the second server to act as a Terminal Server with TS CALs included instead of SQL and SQL CALs.
    4. What are the best features/improvements of SBS?
      • By far, the best improvement in SBS is the Remote Web Workplace. Having the ability to manage who can access what down to the minutest of details really helps.
      • TS RemoteApps via RWW is also a cool new feature.
      • Group Policy tied to Windows Vista is a close second.
    5. What was the last book you read?
      • Devil May Care by Sebastian Faulks. It was okay.
    6. What music CD do you recommend?
      • “Good For Me” Above & Beyond Featuring Zoë Johnston.
    7. What makes you a great MVP?
      • Judging by the feedback I receive from those I work within our local community but also abroad, my ability to listen, assess, and contribute to the I.T. and other needs of the community.
    8. What is in your computer bag?
      • SysInternals tools, ShadowProtect I.T. Edition, 200GB 7200RPM 2.5” external USB drive with the necessary service packs TechNet disk content and drivers, set of Snap-On screwdrivers, hand tool set including pliers and side cutters, cables, and a miscellaneous kit.
    9. What is the best thing that has happened since you have become an MVP?
      • Not sure about the best thing as there have been a number of things that have happened that are pretty cool. One of the best things that does come to mind is being tied into the SBS MVP group via the SBS MVP newsgroup run by Susan Bradley. The group is pretty tight and supportive.
    10. What is your motto?
      • To have Loved and to have been Loved is the best way to go.
    11. Who is your hero?
      • In Business: Clive Bedoe, former President and CEO of West Jet.
      • In Life: My wife Monique. She is an absolutely amazing woman.
    12. What does success mean to you?
      • The appreciative smile on a client’s face and the occasional thank you. Long term business relationships that span over 10 years now!
  • EnergizeIT is Coming…

I just sat through Mark Relph’s kick-off presentation at the Cloud Computing Conference in Toronto.  He talked about what we at Microsoft are doing in what is generally called the Cloud Computing Space and what we call Software+Services.  This got me thinking about yesterday’s meeting about EnergizeIT 2009 and and future.

Over the last few years EnergizeIT has been a one-day conference for developers, IT Pros, architects, students, enthusiasts, and all others excited about technology and the potential it offers.  While we have received very positive feedback about EnergizeIT in that format, we thought it was time to change things up a bit and bring EnergizeIT to other parts of Canada.

From Students to CIO's and everyone in between, EnergizeIT 2009 is about what's possible. Through a series of events across Canada we will show you how to take advantage of the Microsoft Platform to help your organization safely navigate the choppy waters of the current reality. You will have the opportunity to learn how to reduce capital costs while increasing scalability through Microsoft’s approach of bringing together the best aspects of Software and the best aspects of the Internet - Software+Services. You will see how Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 will provide a richer platform for developers and those operating your environment while also providing new virtualization options allowing you to solve key application compatibility issues. Finally, you will have an opportunity to interact with your peers, local experts, and Microsoft Canada advisors to share your challenges and learn from their experience.

We will provide more information about EnergizeIT 2009 in the next couple of weeks through the MSDN Flash and TechNet Flash newsletters, so if you are not signed up to receive either, sign up for the TechNet Flash or MSDN Flash now.  Get ready for EnergizeIT 2009 and come see what’s possible!!

  • Create a “Bootable” Windows 7 VHD

I had posted this entry on Thelazyadmin.com but after reading a comment asking about a previous post I thought I’d throw it up here as well!

A few weeks back we posted an entry on how to boot from a Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2 VHD.  Booting from VHD is new to Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 but one of the caveats was you needed a “clean” VHD to boot from.  There is a very simple way to create this VHD using an open source tool available on the MSDN Code Gallery called WIM2VHD.

WIM2VHD is a command line tool that converts the WIM image into a VHD you can use to boot off.  It does have a few requirements…

    • The prep machine has to be running Windows 7, Server 2008 R2, either of which could be running in a Hyper-V VM
    • A Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2 installation media
    • The Windows 7 Automated Install Kit Beta

There are a number of switches you will need to know as well in order to create the VHD file…

    • /wim: specifies the path to the WIM file
    • /sku: which version (ServerStandard, Ultimate etc…)  You can also use the SkuIndex if you retrieved that with the ImageX tool
    • /vhd: specifies the path and the name of the VHD to be created
    • /size: specifies the size of the VHD in MB
    • /disktype: specifies the type of disk, Dynamic or Fixed

There are some additional switches which you can find on the WIM2VHD documentation that allow you to further customize the VHD to be created.

So let’s say we wanted to create a Windows 7 Ultimate VHD on a 40GB fixed disk; we’d use the following command:

    cscript wim2vhd.wsf /wim:X:\sources\install.wim /sku:ULTIMATE /vhd:C:\Win7Ultimate.vhd /size:40960 /disktype:Fixed

Or if we wanted to create a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard VHD on a 40GB dynamically expanding disk we’d use the following command:

    cscript wim2vhd.wsf /wim:X:\sources\install.wim /sku:SERVERSTANDARD /vhd:C:\ServerStandardR2.vhd /size:40960 /disktype:Dynamic

You can download WIM2VHD and the release documents here.

  • Touring the Microsoft Open Source Labs

Microsoft has assembled quite a team over the last years whose sole mission is to participate in an ongoing conversation with the Linux, Open Source and Microsoft communities about interoperability.  While I was in Seattle for our annual internal training event a few of us got to go and meet Hank Janssen from the Microsoft Open Source Labs, who took us on a tour of the lab and talked about what they do.

The lab provides a number of resources to Microsoft internally (they have an incredible library of various Linux VM images) as well as externally to the Linux, Open Source and Microsoft community.  What sort of resources?

On top of those resources they also help the Open Source community with R&D, testing and development of technologies that are cross platform, enhance interoperability and provide support for getting their projects running on the Microsoft platform.  They have a rack of Dell R900 servers (16 core, 32GB of RAM) that are available for testing.  They have 340 different Linux distributions at their disposal ready to deploy as well!

While this is some serious horsepower they also have some serious iron in the form on an IBM P Series as well!  You don’t see these very often (it might be the roughly 1/2 million dollar price tag) but coming from an IBM hardware background it was cool to see.

All in all it is quite an impressive set up, and it was great to hang out in there and hear the hum of servers and cooling systems.

Since we were heading to the Open Source labs, it was only right to take along Joey’s stuffed Gnu and let him (or is it her?) take a run though the server room, get some exercise and meet up with old friends!

Be sure to check out http://port25.technet.com to learn more about what is going on in these labs.  I have a recording that I will edit into a podcast when I get back so stay tuned for more!

  • Pssst! The Canadian IT Manager portal now online!

    Wait a second!

Why am I announcing this on the Canadian IT Pro blog? Well – I wanted to bring this resource to your attention as well… and maybe ask you a favor.

    What? Why?

We have been talking about Infrastructure Optimization for a while now. We went out last fall to IT Managers (your bosses) with the AlignIT series of events and talked about Infrastructure Optimization – this time in their terms.  In case you forget -  you can use the tools we provide with IO optimization and identify areas in your IT arsenal that could stand to be shored up or improving in order to make your overall life as an IT Professional more proactive instead of reactive.

Besides showing you where you can get more information on Infrastructure Optimization, I thought I would give you the tools to give to your management in order to discover this type of information themselves by announcing to you “the IT Manager Portal now online.”  I thought it would be good to ask YOU to share the news about the portal with your boss and with your team.  One thing that we’re trying to address with the IT Manager Portal is the aggregation of contextually relevant information for IT Managers. Right now, information for IT Managers is rather fragmented across multiple sites and not necessarily easy to locate. Our team hopes that with the creation of this portal, we’ve taken steps to address this.

So here it is – we’ve launched a portal specifically designed for IT Managers in Canada.

    image

I spent some time perusing the page recently and I wanted to draw your attention to some highlights:

    • Direct contact / email to our team. Damir Bersinic is our point person for IT Manager related activities and resources on our team. He’s put up his info and email address right on the page in case you have any need to talk or make a connection to someone who’s passionate about IT Managers at Microsoft.
    • Links to our most asked for resources from AlignIT – our IO model, evaluation tools and reference information. We’ve got Infrastructure, Application Platform and Business productivity highlighted on the main page with more resources to follow.
    • Hot Topics like Licensing and platform architecture / blueprints for solutions.
    • Beneath the fold resources include links to Podcasts, webcasts, events and training for IT Managers and your staff.

The design of the page is such that we can feed in new and relevant content as we create it or as it’s identified to us as something to share. It is also designed to leverage Social Bookmarking from our TechNet/MSDN community driven Social bookmarking engine.

Check out the site – give Damir or myself your feedback and ping us if you feel there is something we can add to provide more value to the IT Manager Portal. Let us know what you think and what your manager / team thinks of the resource.

I am anxious to see how it evolves over time.
