  • You Only Need One Tool to Get System Center 2012 RC Installed!!

SC2012-UinifiedInstallerTalking to individuals who downloaded the System Center 2012 RC from the TechNet Eval Center in December or early January, one of the pieces of feedback I received is that in order to get everything running you needed to install each component individually and that just took too long and also meant that you were potentially responding to over 450 screens of information.  I get it.  That’s a lot of work to test out a Pruvate Cloud solution and its components.  Looks like the product team heard you as well, so last week they released an RC of the System Center Unified Installer!

The System Center Unified Installer is integrated into the current System Center 2012 RC download from the TechNet Eval Center, and allows you to install of the System Center 2012 RC components in as little as 16 screens.

Just start the Setup.exe in the Unified Installer folder. Then the Install System Center button becomes available! After that a message box is displayed and  the installation begins asking you some of the familiar questions and also installing the pieces you need to be successful:

    • Microsoft Software License Terms
    • Component Selection (Orchestrator, Virtual Machine Manager, App Controller, Operations Manager, Configuration Manager, Service Manager & Data Protection Manager)
      • Keep the following in mind:
      • Orchestrator is a required Product Component (Unified Installer requires Orchestrator)
      • App Controller depends on Virtual Machine Manager
    • Component Media Location (for all products selected)
    • Configuration Manager License Terms
    • Prerequisite License Terms
    • Prerequisite Media Location (e.g. SQL Server 2008 R2 + SP1 + CU4)
    • Installation Destination Location (for all products selected)
    • Servers (for all products selected)
    • Service Accounts (Installer Account)
    • Component Specific Questions (e.g. OpsMgr Management Group, ConfigMgr Site Code & Site Name)
    • Communications and Updates
    • Installation Validation
    • Deployment Progress
    • Deployment Summary Report

That's all you need to do to install System Center 2012 and start your journey to the Microsoft Private Cloud.

Download the Microsoft Private Cloud Software stack including System Center 2012 RC and try the Unified Installer that is now part of the download package.

  • Got that FREE DoubleDouble? Here’s Things To Do While Enjoying It!

logo_SysCnt-v_webRick’s blog post and call to action to download the System Center 2012 RC products and get a coffee card from that great Canadian chain whose name rhymes with Jim Morton is a great incentive to action, but many folks have asked “What do I do after I have the System Center 2012 RC products to maximize my learning?”.  GREAT QUESTION!

Before anything else, you have to download the SC2012 RC products like Rick said (instructions to do so are at the end of this post).  Once you have that, I would recommend doing the following:

First, visit the System Center 2012 Evaluation Center on TechNet.  This is a great starting point to learn about all of the System Center 2012 RC products.  You can view the SC2012 overview video and then dig into each product in more detail and start to setup your evaluation lab.

Next, go to the TechNet Library for each of the products to learn about the best way to get started.  You can get there from the System Center 2012 Evaluation Center or directly for each product in the System Center Line:

The final step is simple – PLAY WITH THE TECHNOLOGY! No better way to learn than to experience it yourself.

BTW, if you interested in trying out some of the System Center 2012 RC products in a virtual environment, you can download a pre-configured VHD of System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 RC, or you can install the software products in virtual machines in your own environment.  Note however that only SCVMM 2012 RC has a pre-configured VHD available.

Now, if you have not yet downloaded the System Center 2012 RC software (or you have colleagues who also want their FREE DoubleDouble – or several), here are the steps to do so:

    1. Use this link to get started
    2. Sign in with your WindowsLive ID (to pre-populate your data)
    3. Verify your SHIPPING details to your mailing address and other pertinent data. (you will want to ensure it is correct).  This is how we know where to send that coffee card I spoke of.
    4. Click FINISH – the download manager will start to download your evals in one click.

Also, don’t forget to take some time over the Holidays to relax and just enjoy yourselfSmile

  • How would you like a DoubleDouble ?

imageTime time of year everyone is rushing to get things done both work and in their home life. As you rush to the get ready for the holidays – you might also be like a lot of IT folks who relish the time in-between December 25th and new years eve.  This slower / quieter time at work could open up an opportunity – a brief window of time - where you can try some things out before the new year.

(I personally loved this break when I worked as an IT admin – I literally had the run of the office and time to try out new things.)

If you are in this situation and are looking for something to try out and expand your skill base to make you into a Hero at work – might I suggest checking out our System Center 2012 product line?  It’s currently in Pre-Release RC mode (Release Candidate) that will be upgradeable to Full product when it goes RTM in the new year.  Management solutions like our System Center release of products put you in the drivers seat of your datacenter.

    • Need to manage the plethora of new devices coming into your office after the workers return with shiny new tablets, slates, iWhateversSystem Center Configuration Manager 2012 has you covered for those Consumerization of IT woes.
    • Backups slowing you down? Need something more effective then tape, in multiple geographic locations? System Center Data Protection Manager has you covered.
    • Want some down and dirty consultant-in-a-box performance monitoring and optimization across all your datacenter and non Microsoft devices like routers, switches and mystery distributions? System Center Operations Manager 2012 has your back
    • Grappling with your physical AND virtual worlds with multiple hypervisors? Living in the land of VMware, Citrix and Hyper-V? System Center Virtual Machine Manager simplifies your virtualization woes and gives you a silver lining to your Private Cloud.

If this isn’t enough to get you interested in getting the jump on your skills adjustment and checking out our latest offerings before they RTM (I mentioned they are upgradeable to RTM, right?) – how about I sweeten the deal for you, while they are downloading?

Let me simplify it for ya.

    1. Use this link to get started
    2. Sign in with your WindowsLive ID (to pre-populate your data)
    3. Verify your SHIPPING details to your mailing address and other pertinent data. (you will want to ensure it is correct)
    4. click FINISH – the download manager will start to download your evals in one click.

Why was step #3 so important?

We’ll ship you a gift card from a famous Canadian coffee retailer (rhymes with Jim Morton’s) for about 5 double-doubles for your troubles and enjoyment as you work through the evaluations and how they’ll make you a Management guru in your work environment.  Heck – you can even check out some of the free online training at www.microsoftvirtualacademy.com while you are waiting for them to complete their DL.

What are you waiting for? Don’t Delay – we’ve only set aside a certain number of cards.  Once they are gone – they are gone! That link again is http://www.microsoft.com/canada/technet/system-center/

oh – and before anyone asks – this offer is valid and available to ALL CANADIAN Citizens in Canada, INCLUDING Québec!

  • Have Many Kinds of Devices and Need to Manage Them All? We Have a Tool for That…

Over the last few months while out visiting many communities through TechDays and other events, I often get questions from IT professionals responsible for ensuring that all devices connected to the corporate network are safe, secure, and accounted for.  With the influx of consumer-focused devices in the workplace that many of you are facing, having a tool to enable this is even more critical.  Today, I ran across a blog post on the Microsoft Server and Cloud Platform Blog on how you can use System Center Configuration Manager 2012 to do many of the things that people have been asking me about.

logo_SysCnt-v_webIn the blog post titled “Let System Center Configuration Manager 2012 Help You Enable Consumerization of IT”, Jeffrey Sutherland highlights the three key features of System Center Configuration Manager 2012 (download the eval here) that help you manage non-traditional “consumer” devices:

    • Asset inventory and reporting - ConfigMgr automatically discovers all those devices that have connected through Exchange Active Sync (EAS) and collects basic inventory, so you can view them directly in the ConfigMgr console, build device collections and queries, and run asset reports. We also have a bunch of reports built-in to help you analyze the use of mobile devices at your company, such as a useful summary report that breaks out the devices by operating system. And we can even automatically associate the devices to the users, so you can pull lists of just the users who are affected by a policy change or whose chosen device may need to be updated to a newer version of its mobile operating system.
    • Settings policy management - Define the default settings policy applied to devices connecting to EAS. Within seconds the policy will be pushed to Exchange and applied to mobile devices the next time they sync. There are close to 50 different policies that may be configured through EAS. Most common, and the most important ones in my humble opinion, are the use of strong PIN, required device encryption and remote wipe. These can ensure that your company's data is reasonably protected regardless of the mobile device choices made by your users.
    • Remote wipe - I am calling this one out separately from the rest of the policy management as I believe it has the greatest end user impact, but it’s a critical feature to deal with lost or stolen devices or similar situations. And, if ConfigMgr has the user association information, the end user can self-service this action from the new ConfigMgr Software Catalog (stay tuned for future blogs and demos about the Software Catalog).

You can read the full blog post here.  To try this out in your own demo environment, download ConfigMgr from the TechNet Evaluation Center.  You can also download the full set of System Center 2012 products from the same location and test out how System Center Operations Manager 2012 can help you monitor all your systems and applications, as well as how to manage your Hyper-V, VMWare and Xen virtual environments with System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012.

  • Resources for Retention

imageYou can attend all the conferences, seminars, and training courses that you want, but just watching and listening will only allow you to retain about 10% of the information given to you. A measly 10%. That’s a pretty low return on your investment. Luckily, we’ve designed TechDays to help participants remember and recall a whole lot more than that.

For those attending the conference in person (there is still time to register for Vancouver and Montreal!) there are the Instructor-Led Labs where you can bring your notebook and get your hand dirty on the cool technology that you’ve been learning about. You can also review the materials – session recordings and access to the labs will go live on the TechDays site after the conference is finished, in December. But in addition there are resources that you can use to supplement your learning.

The complete list of session resources will be coming out soon as my colleagues pull together information for each of their areas. But for now, I’ll list the ones for the sessions that I’ve been working on organizing – the Security, Identity and Management sessions. These sessions cover a wide range of topics – everything from securing your wireless network to how the latest innovation in System Center, called Orchestrator, helps you build a flexible private cloud infrastructure by creating automated process workflows from numerous vendor products.

Whether you’re able to join us in-person at TechDays or not, below are some great resources for diving in and learning more about securing and managing your infrastructure. Happy Learning!

MGT302 - Get Out of Dodge: Migrating to Windows Server 2008 R2 x64

You can't wait any longer. Your infrastructure is still clinging to the 2003 x86 server architecture but with every day that goes by, you worry more and more that the other shoe will drop. You know you have to bite the bullet and get these critical services over to more modern hardware paired with the current supported revisions of the server platform. These are the services that keep the lights on, the servers running and most importantly: the users happy! This demo-intensive session covers how to migrate essential services like DHCP, DNS, File/Print, Certificate Services and more. If you or your customers are stuck in the x86 migration frontier - show them the path to x64 2008 R2 nirvana.

    Session Lead: Rick Claus
    Cities: Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal
Technologies: Windows Server 2008 R2: Server Management, Windows Server 2008 R2: Active Directory

MGT303 - Diagnosing the Diseases of DNS

Network troubleshooters soon learn that the first place to look when the network stops working is DNS... and soon after that, they learn that the in-the-box DNS troubleshooting tool, nslookup, is a pretty basic answer. So if keeping DNS working is part of your job, don't miss this "beyond the basics" DNS troubleshooting session originally created by Mark Minasi. We start with "dig," the nslookup replacement that is a must-know for DNS techies. Then we see how to give your troubled DNS queries a thorough workup with Network Monitor (even if you've never used Netmon), where you'll be able to find out why those dynamic updates aren't happening. From there, get the scoop on "EDNS," a feature of DNS servers since 2003 that has been blamed - wrongly - for a host of DNS ills. After that, see how to take your DNS system's pulse with DNSLint, a free, not-to-be-missed utility. Then see how to understand what those DNS logs are REALLY saying. Attend this talk and you'll soon be known as "Doctor DNS!"

    Session Lead: Rick Claus
    Cities: Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal
Technologies: Windows Server 2008 R2: Server Management, Windows Server 2008 R2: Active Directory

MGT310 - Helping to Protect the Microsoft EndPoint

Effective endpoint security is implemented using 3 golden rules 1) Run Anti-virus software, 2) Keep your system patched and 3) Use a personal firewall. This session will show how to use Microsoft Forefront, SCCM/WSUS and other Microsoft tools to implement these 3 rules for Microsoft Windows-based systems.

    Session Lead: Stewart Cawthray
    Cities: Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal
Technologies: Microsoft Forefront, Microsoft System Center

MGT373 – Managing SharePoint Using System Center

Helping to ensure that your SharePoint Farm infrastructure is running smoothly is one of the most important areas that an administrator of SharePoint is concerned with. In this session you will learn how Microsoft System Center can be configured to assist you in helping to keep your SharePoint-based infrastructure running well. You will find out how to tune alerts according to configuration and internal governance policies, help to increase overall service levels, as well as proactively manage incidents using the family of System Center products.

    Session Lead: Jason Kaczor
    Cities: Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal
Technologies: Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft System Center

MGT374 - System Center in the Data Center - Putting Together the Puzzle

This session will take you through a full life cycle at a Data Center. The process will start with a request for a new server from a business unit that comes into System Center Service Manager. The Web Server is deployed into the environment using System Center Configuration Manager. It’s a hit and the site is over loaded with web requests. System Center Operations Manager sends an alert on the situation. The Data Center operator gets the alert and decides to allow additional Web Servers. The Site Goes Dark…..Critical outage. A new alert comes into the Data Center operator and he chooses to allow a full Disaster Recovery Plan to execute to a backup data center with a click of a single button. Once again the site is up and running. In this session you will see how the System Center Suite of products integrates and executes automated processes in the Data center environment. This will be a very active demo-filled session that you don’t want to miss.

Session Leads: Islam Gomaa and William Bressette
    Cities: Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal
    Technologies: Microsoft System Center

MGT375 – Helping to Secure your Wireless Network with 802.1x and Active Directory

Wireless networks are in use in almost every business and every home, yet many suffer from security vulnerabilities that are easily protected. In this session you will learn how you can help lock down your wireless network and integrate Active Directory to control and manage access to your wireless network thereby helping to keep unauthorized connections and users out.

    Session Lead: Todd Lamothe
    Cities: Toronto, Montreal
Technologies: Identity & Access Management, Windows Server 2008 R2: Active Directory

MGT377 - Leveraging Legacy Systems with Windows PowerShell

There is a misconceived notion that moving to Windows PowerShell to administer your IT infrastructure means a rebuild approach, in other words - dropping the old for the new. In this session you will learn how you can easily use PowerShell to not only work with and manage Legacy systems but also help improve your experience in maintaining them. Want to find out how – come to this session.

    Session Lead: Sean Kearney
    Cities: Toronto
Technologies: Windows Server 2008 R2: Server Management

MGT378 - SAM and IT Asset Management using Microsoft System Center

The implementation of Software Asset Management (SAM) and IT Asset Management (ITAM) is a means of helping to drive down IT costs, reducing security and compliance risk, and improving operational efficiency. This presentation describes how highly effective SAM and ITAM programs are delivered and supported using the powerful capabilities of Microsoft System Center. You’ll see how different capabilities of the System Center family of products, including Service Manager, Configuration Manager, Operations Manager and Orchestrator/Opalis are combined with technology partner solutions to provide visibility and control of hardware and software through the full asset life cycle, to minimize asset expenditure and to help maintain software license compliance. The solution shows how existing infrastructure, volume agreements and suite licenses, and expertise can be leveraged for rapid, highly cost-effective program implementation.

In case you missed the earlier blog post with the details: here’s what we’re talking about.

There are lots of players out there in the Virtualization Market. All of them have options to help you build a highly available solution to virtualize and protect your servers all with varying costs associated with them. Did you know Microsoft has a solution that you can cut your teeth into even if you are just learning the ropes and don’t have access to high end SAN hardware? Join us for a demo intensive 90 minute session that builds a solution from scratch and gives you the skills to bring this technology into your organization or customer environments for a fraction of the cost of the competitors offerings (you know who we’re talking about). This session will cover the story of an organization looking to enhance their current infrastructure and virtualization solutions. It will start with the requirements, proceed into the build process and demonstrate all of its capabilities including post deployment management. Do you have questions to ask? Are you more familiar with “the other guys” offerings and need to have some clarity on what is actually capable with the Microsoft Virtualization offerings? This session is for you - we’re leaving plenty of time for questions along the way.

  • Virtual Reality: The truth about Microsoft’s Interoperable Virtualization Stack

network-data-storage[1]It started off as an idea a couple of months back. That idea was around getting the soup to nuts details on the Hyper-V / SCVMM / iSCSI solution into an entertaining session that could be delivered in person, online or by a group of individuals across Canada. Well – it’s ready. With the help of Mitch Garvis from SWMI consulting group, David Kawula from TriconTS, myself and more to come – we’ve built some great resources and engaging content to take on the road (both in the real world and online) for all those interested.

    Here’s the official blurb:

I threw out the offer on Twitter for any and all to stick up their hand for a visit and possible delivery of something like this in their neck of the woods and so far I have quite a few takers…

Halifax, Cape Bretton, Montreal, Victoria, Ottawa…

The list is growing. Are you interested in having us come out and talk “no-bs-corporate-speak-no-FUD” about Virtualization and how it can be a game changer in your organization – EVEN IF you’ve already committed $$$$ to “the other guys”? Send me an email (rick.claus@microsoft.com) or drop me a comment here on the blog. I’d love the opportunity to head out your way and see what’s possible.

This is open to any and ALL user groups or professional associations. Don’t HAVE a user group in your neck of the woods? Maybe this is an opportunity to set something up!  WE CAN HELP. Not up for a long term commitment of running a group just yet – why not help us out with this event to get your feet wet!

  • Dynamic Memory and Remote FX support now in SCVMM 2008 w/ SP1

imageA quick note to say that SP1 of System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 is now released and available to download. We announced the availability of the BETA of SCVMM 2012 earlier this week – but this brings some important support of our newest Hyper-V technologies that were included with SP1 for Hyper-V into the “managed” fold. With the advent of Dynamic Memory, Hyper-V hosts now have a CONSERVATIVE 40% greater consolidation capability WITHOUT impacting performance of Virtual Guests while maintaining the importance of ASLR.

I believe some posts are in order to talk about Dynamic Memory and how it has changed the way I think about allocating memory to Virtual Guests now. I’m in the process of restaging my portable lab environment I use for demos in order to support some events coming up – so I’ll capture some screencasts / screenshots and create up some blog posts to go along with ‘em.
